Studio Headphones
Open-back, semi-open or closed-back?
The design defines the job: closed-back studio headphones isolate – in both directions. When recording, that keeps the click track from bleeding into the vocal microphone. Open-back models sound more spacious and natural, which makes them the first choice for mixing and mastering – provided the room is quiet. Semi-open designs sit in between and are the compromise for small studios where one pair has to do everything.
What matters in studio headphones
Unlike hi-fi headphones, studio models are not meant to flatter but to tell the truth – that is the only way to hear what is actually going on in a recording. Also check the impedance: low-impedance models run happily on interfaces and mobile devices, while high-impedance designs unfold their potential on proper headphone amplifiers. And since sessions get long, wearing comfort is not a luxury but a working requirement.
The setup around them
Good headphones are half your monitoring chain – the other half comes from microphones for recording and, depending on your setup, a MIDI controller for playing parts in. You will find every design from DJ to in-ear models in our headphones overview.
