MIDI keyboard, pad controller or fader box?

A MIDI controller produces no sound of its own – it drives your software instruments and your DAW. The right form factor depends on how you work: MIDI keyboards are the all-rounder for melodies, chords and recording parts. Pad controllers shine for beats, drums and clip-based workflows. Fader and knob boxes take over mixing and plugin control – and many devices combine several of these worlds in one housing.

What to look for when buying

The key count defines the job: 25 keys are enough for bass lines and sketches on the go, 49 or 61 are the studio standard, and if you come from the piano, 88 weighted keys on a master keyboard will feel like home. Beyond that, look at velocity sensitivity and aftertouch, pads and knobs for direct access, and how well the controller integrates with your DAW out of the box.

Controllers meet sound generators

If you want to leave the computer out of the equation, hardware with its own sound engine is worth a look: synthesizers connect seamlessly to your controller setup via MIDI. And for monitoring while recording and producing, you will find matching studio headphones right here in the shop.
