ABOUT KATJA LAU
I have been passionate about music since I was a child. My musical journey began at the age of 5 with the flute, later adding piano and guitar.
But when I heard the saxophone for the first time in a live concert, I knew immediately: this is my instrument. The expressive sound, which can convey every emotion, touched me deeply. Since then, the saxophone has been my constant companion.
My heart beats for soul, pop music, and jazz. I studied my instrument at the Rostock University of Music and Drama and at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. Since 2001, I have been living in my adopted home of Berlin, where I feel artistically and musically at home.
A big part of my musical life is my band BrassAppeal. We have been performing together on stages around the world for over 20 years. BrassAppeal is not just a band, it is my musical family.
Our performances are energetic and bring a special kind of girl power to the stage. Our musical connection and our joy of playing is what sets us apart—and touches the people who listen to us.
I have been working closely with Yamaha Music Europe for many years. As a Yamaha artist and lecturer for the workshop series “Saxophone for Beginners – a Hit on the First Day,” I travel throughout German-speaking countries and am a regular guest on AIDA Cruises ships. These workshops are particularly close to my heart.
I have accompanied thousands of people on their journey from their first note to their first song, encouraging them to fulfill their lifelong dream of playing the saxophone.
