RØDE has redesigned the NT1 from the ground up, adding a sensational and utterly distinctive-sounding model to its range of large-diaphragm condenser microphones. RØDE’s CEO, Peter Freedman, tasked his engineers with developing a microphone that would come as close as possible to the sound of his favourite vintage microphone. The result was the NT1 – featuring a new housing, new electronics, a new capsule, a perfectly flat frequency response without any presence boost, and an incredibly low self-noise level of just 4.5 dBA!
The aluminium body is first nickel-plated to make it corrosion-resistant. It is then coated with an extremely scratch-resistant ceramic finish. The enamel powder is applied perfectly evenly using an electrostatic process and subsequently fired. Finally, the lettering is laser-etched onto the surface. The result: a very high-quality finish that still looks smart even after years of use and, in combination with the electronics, also ensures excellent resistance to RF interference.
RØDE developed the ‘HF6’ specifically for the NT1. It is an edge-polarised, gold-plated 1-inch capsule, tuned for a vintage sound. Its sound is clearly reminiscent of legendary classics, yet it produces significantly less noise (in fact, almost none at all). RØDE is also breaking new ground with the suspension system thanks to its collaboration with Rycote ® – behind the grille is a miniature lyre in which the capsule is mounted, thereby eliminating disruptive vibrations from the outset: the NT1 offers surprisingly good impact noise damping even without a shock mount.
At its hi-tech factory not far from Sydney, RØDE leaves nothing to chance. Circuit board assembly is fully automated and ultra-precise, after which the electronics’ specifications are meticulously checked, as this is the only way to achieve the astonishingly low self-noise of 4.5 dBA in conjunction with the HF6 capsule.
The NT1-KIT includes the SM6 Deluxe shock mount, which ensures effective decoupling of the microphone from structure-borne noise. The SM6 features an integrated fabric pop filter that can be removed if required, adjusted on two axes and optimally positioned using its telescopic extension. A 6-metre XLR cable and a dust bag complete the NT1-KIT. By the way, it is advisable to actually use the dust bag once you’ve finished working! The NT1 is manufactured by RØDE in Australia; registered users receive a 10-year warranty.
