Maximum tuning stability! With the "Kluson Backlock System", the string is pulled through the horizontal hole in the shaft until it is halfway taut over the frets and then locked in place using the knurled wheel on the back of the machine headstock. A small pin inside the shaft clamps the string in place. The ingenious thing about this mechanism is that if you loosen the knurled wheel again and turn it further and further back, it finally ends up in neutral - so the knurled wheel can never fall off and get lost!
