Beneath its clearly structured user interface, Teenage Engineering’s ‘Magic Radio’ hides a few exciting tricks up its sleeve: want to rewind briefly to make a note of the title of your new favourite song? Restart the radio play or have the sports results read out more slowly? Missed the news? No problem! The OB-4 stores all playback in a virtual 2-hour endless loop. This can be looped, time-stretched and much more besides. Thanks to motorised controls, the whole thing is as simple and intuitive to use as an old cassette recorder.
The audio technology is also state-of-the-art and, thanks to the built-in 2-way stereo speaker system with 2×38-watt Class D amplification and a flow-optimised bass reflex port, delivers crystal-clear, natural sound with room-filling bass. Available sources include the built-in FM tuner, high-end Bluetooth, line-in and the ‘Disk’ mode. As the next ‘magic trick’, new experimental functions are continually being developed for the OB-4; there are currently three sound loops in this mode:
Ambient: drone sounds generated from excerpts of a radio programme
Metronome: High-definition stereo recording, 1–800 BPM
Karma: 30 musical mantra loops as a spiritual companion
The cleverly designed carrying handle doubles as a stand for the optimal listening and operating position and houses the smart FM coil antenna. The OB-4 is also a great companion when you’re on the move; the built-in LiPo battery provides enough power for a week of mobile music enjoyment or 8 hours of continuous operation at a maximum output volume of 100dB. The bespoke, optionally available carrying cases in leather or nylon ensure optimum protection whilst offering maximum functionality.
