Latest-generation ESS conversion

The ADI-2/4 Pro EX features RME’s latest converter design, incorporating the ES9823Pro A/D converter and the ES9039Q2M D/A converter, which offer an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), lower distortion (THD) and even greater conversion accuracy. Combined with RME’s optimised analogue circuits and SteadyClock EX technology, the unit continues to deliver transparent conversion and exceptional clock stability.

Enhanced connectivity

A new, lockable USB-C port replaces the previous USB connection, whilst retaining compatibility with USB 2.0. The robust connector ensures a secure fit in mobile and studio environments; a matching 1.8 m USB-C cable is included.

Advanced protection circuits

The hardware has been further refined with several new protection features. A channel-independent DC protection circuit safeguards each headphone output individually, whilst a new, active, fuse-free power supply protection system detects reverse polarity and overvoltage before any damage can occur.

To increase installation flexibility, the ADI-2/4 Pro EX now features a dedicated earth terminal (ground connection) for connecting turntables or for earthing where required. The unit is also compatible with the forthcoming RM19-III rack-mount adapter.

SteadyClock EX: Factory-calibrated clock precision

SteadyClock FS has been enhanced with factory calibration of the internal clock to an accuracy of ±1 ppm. Furthermore, users can adjust the internal sampling rate by ±50 ppm in increments of 0.1 ppm. This enables precise synchronisation with external devices even without a dedicated word clock connection – an approach that RME refers to as ‘Sync without Sync’.

Enhanced analogue performance

The analogue input stage has also been significantly enhanced. Reference levels now extend down to -35 dBu, enabling the direct connection of dynamic microphones and supporting many additional recording scenarios.

RIAA equalisation is now available in line mode (0 dB gain). This allows the use of external phono preamplifiers and simplifies the integration of moving-coil (MC) cartridge systems. Selectable balanced input impedances of 94 kOhm and 47 kOhm provide optimal matching for balanced moving-magnet (MM) cartridges.

The higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the updated DAC further reduces the already extremely low background noise of the headphone outputs at lower reference levels, in both unbalanced and balanced modes.

Extended Linear Analogue Range (ELAR)

The ADI-2/4 Pro EX features a revised version of the ELAR (Extended Linear Analogue Range) technology found in its predecessor, the ADI-2/4 Pro SE, which is designed to preserve maximum signal integrity throughout the entire analogue signal path.

ELAR combines the outstanding performance of RME’s latest converter architecture with carefully optimised filtering to achieve superb transparency and an exceptionally linear frequency response. The result is reference-level audio quality that, despite digital signal processing, comes remarkably close to analogue purity, whilst offering full DSP flexibility for a wide range of sound options.
