The Radial JDX is a DI box designed specifically for use with guitar amplifiers and allows the engineer to record the sound resulting from the combination of guitar amp and speaker cabinet using innovative dummy load inputs and advanced speaker simulation.
Peter Janis, President of Radial, explains: "Guitarists are used to placing a microphone directly in front of their guitar amp to pick up the guitar sound for the PA or recording system. This method is problematic because when the microphone is so close to the speaker cone, even the slightest change in its position causes a drastic change in the basic sound. This is compounded by the effects of the room acoustics, which change with the stage environment. The availability of a second, more reliable signal source allows the sound engineer to achieve a working system more quickly, minimising uncertainties in stage operations and allowing the audience to enjoy a better, more consistent sound image."
In keeping with Radial's philosophy of uncompromising performance, the Radial JDX features a fully discrete Class A signal path with an active balanced catch-up amplifier, ensuring optimum sound transfer from the amplifier to the sound system. Integration is very simple thanks to "from amp" and "to speaker" connections. A balanced XLR output with microphone level allows connection to mixing consoles and features ground isolation to prevent ground loops, as well as a switchable 180° phase rotation to resolve polarity issues.
Janis continues: "The announcement of the Radial PhazeT completes our 'guitar amp, mic and direct signal' offering. When a microphone signal is combined with a direct signal, it follows it slightly out of time as it is delayed by the air path between the speaker cone and the microphone. The Phazer allows the fundamental frequency of both signals to be equalised over time, resulting in a much more powerful sound. Once you find the "sweet spot", your guitar sound becomes noticeably more massive! I'm sure this facility will be much appreciated by more discerning musicians on tour, especially with the proliferation of digital mixing consoles and in-ear monitoring systems. Many bands nowadays even do without sound checks because the entire monitor sound is played in their headphones! The JDX brings a new level of consistency to live sound, making it even easier and quicker to set up an operational system every night."
Like all Radial DI cabinets, the JDX is constructed from 2mm sheet steel and features a unique I-beam construction inside that guarantees reliable operation for years to come, even in the toughest stage environments. A non-slip, full-surface rubberised base prevents the JDX from falling off the double-decker Marshall amp, while also providing electrical insulation to protect it from the notorious cabinet screws of a high-voltage tube amp. The JDX is supplied with an external 15V DC power supply.
