About Marvin Frey

Marvin Frey received his first trumpet lessons at the Landesmusikgymnasium Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate State Music High School) and subsequently studied at the Maastricht Conservatory, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in jazz trumpet with honors in 2017. He then went on to pursue his master’s degree at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. His time with the BundesJazzOrchester and his lessons with Malte Burba also had a formative influence on him. His artistic development was supported by scholarships from the Zukunftsinitiative Rheinland-Pfalz (Future Initiative Rhineland-Palatinate) and the Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Dörken Stiftung (Werner Richard – Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation).

During his musical career, he has performed with the WDR Big Band, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, and artists such as Joshua Redman, The Temptations, and The Four Tops, among others. As a permanent member of Moop Mama and the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Marvin Frey now moves between festival shows and international concert stages. He also performs in a duo with pianist Jerry Lu and, with his own band, the Marvin Frey Group, focuses on his own compositions and arrangements. In 2020, he released his debut album, *Status Quo*.

The combination of stage experience and music education also shapes his pedagogical work. Marvin Frey teaches jazz trumpet at the Landesmusikgymnasium Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate State Music High School), has served as a lecturer at the Music Academies in Freiburg and Stuttgart, and works as an instructor with the Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland State Youth Jazz Orchestras. As a certified Burba Brass Teacher and Yamaha Artist, he leads workshops on instrumental technique and musical development. On the MusicLab podcast powered by Yamaha, he talks with Patrick Hinsberger about practicing, creativity, and the daily life of a musician.
