The multi/poly from KORG draws inspiration from the legendary Mono/Poly analogue synthesiser of the 1980s, which was renowned for its powerful sound and experimental features thanks to its four oscillators, and brings this concept into the modern era using sophisticated modelling technology. It is the very first instrument to utilise the latest generation of KORG Analog Modelling, which, in addition to the meticulous reproduction of classic oscillators and filters, incorporates for the first time complete voice boards featuring the interplay of components of varying quality, envelope generators and even portamento behaviour. In this way, the multi/poly generates sounds that seem almost alive and possess that typical analogue timbre. The Classic, Digital and Waveshaper oscillators available – which, of course, can be freely combined with one another – offer a veritable playground for sound designers and synthesiser enthusiasts. Within a single sound programme, there are 4 oscillators, a noise generator with its own filter and saturation, and a ring modulator. Combined with the dual filter – featuring the flexible cross-modulation familiar from the Mono/Poly – four loopable DAHDSR envelopes, five LFOs and six modulation processors, there are no limits to your imagination when it comes to sound design. Within a single performance, up to four such sound programmes can be combined as Layer, Split or Layer Rotate sounds to create particularly complex timbres. (Layer Rotate is a function inspired by the classic Mono/Poly, which switches between different sound programmes in a round-robin style with every key press.) To animate these sounds, the Motion Sequencing 2.0 function offers several independent sequencer tracks for timing, pitch, shape and four further parameters, each of which can be recorded as individual steps or in real time. And that’s not all: the Kaoss Physics function provides further, unique modulation possibilities based on the physical model of a virtual ball that moves across a plane according to pre-set parameters and can be controlled or nudged via the integrated X/Y touchpad. This ball generates eight different modulation signals at any given moment, which can affect virtually any sound-shaping parameter. This creates complex modulations that never repeat exactly and are particularly effective in a live setting. Three blocks of studio-quality effects, along with a master reverb and a master EQ, round off the sounds perfectly. When switching between different sound programmes, the Smooth Sound Transition feature – familiar from KORG’s flagship workstations – ensures natural-sounding transitions without any abrupt cuts in the sounds or effects. An inspiring randomisation function is available for creating new sounds; at the touch of a button, it randomly sets all or only specific sound-shaping parameters within a predefined range, which can lead to completely new timbres or useful starting points for further sound experiments. The new, semi-weighted keyboard with 37 velocity-sensitive keys ensures a comfortable playing experience, whilst the elegant design, featuring wooden elements on the sides and a blue-and-black control panel, is a lovingly crafted homage to the classic Mono/Poly. Free editor/librarian software for Mac and PC is also available for particularly convenient programming of the multi/poly. And to ensure the instrument can be transported in a manner befitting its status, it comes with a matching blue soft case featuring the multi/poly logo.
