Kali Audio presents the IN-5, a 3-way 5″ near-field monitor designed as a precise monitoring system for smaller rooms. This evolution of the successful LP series features a sophisticated bass-reflex system with a high-output woofer. However, instead of the usual tweeter with a 3D imaging waveguide, a coaxial mid-high frequency combination has been fitted here. The profile-optimised 4″ midrange driver also acts as a waveguide. By limiting the peak excursion to 1 mm, intermodulation distortion – which otherwise occurs in coaxial systems – has been avoided. The midrange driver also takes the strain off the woofer and tweeter, meaning that the IN-5 delivers a more harmonious and distortion-free sound overall than conventional 2-way studio monitors.
The crossover frequency of the woofer is 280 Hz, making the IN-5 an acoustic point source. You will search in vain for phase cancellations on the vertical axis here. Instead, the IN-5 offers uniform dispersion across the entire frequency response, with excellent depth separation and localisation. The stereo image also benefits from the coaxial arrangement, enabling a detailed mix. Thanks to the ‘Boundary EQ’ – familiar from the LP series – the IN-5 can be adapted to different studio environments just as easily as its sister models.
